DO YOU HAVE A CARPENTER BEE PROBLEM?
Paske Pest Control & Wildlife Solutions has you covered. We offer carpenter bee control and removal service for the St. Louis and surrounding area and throughout Missouri and Illinois.
DO I HAVE BUMBLE BEES OR CARPENTER BEES?
The easiest way to determine what you have is by the type and location of the nest. Most bumble bees in Missouri and Illinois build their nests in safe areas below the ground or as close to ground level as possible. Typical nest sites include underground abandoned burrows of other animals, under grass clippings, leaves, or compost and open areas underneath exterior siding of buildings. Carpenter bees build inside places like decks, porches, roof eaves, wood play structures, sheds, and wooden lawn furniture, etc. Capenter bees build their nest (galleries) by boring a hole about the diameter of their body (3/8- ½ of an inch) inside of a suitable piece of wood. Then tunnel further into the wood and will make a right-angle turn with the grain of the wood. The longer a particular gallery is in use the larger it will be. Both bumble bees and carpenter bees are common throughout St. Louis County, St. Charles County, Jefferson County, Lincoln County and Warren County.
ARE THEY DANGEROUS?
Stinging insects such as carpenter bees send people to the emergency room each year. Female carpenter bees do have a stinger, but are not very aggressive and will rarely sting. Their venom is however potent enough to cause a severe allergic reaction in some individuals that may require medical attention and could result in death. Male carpenter bees are very aggressive and will defend their nesting sites by buzzing around and flying aggressively at the person or animals that they perceive as a threat. However their “bark” is bigger than their “bite” since the males do not have a stinger.
WHY DO I HAVE THEM?
No particular real reason. Many homes in our area experience carpenter bees around their home during the summer months.
The best defense against carpenter bees is to make sure that any wood used to create a structure on your property has been stained or painted since they prefer to invade untreated wood. Also, any holes found in wood on your property should be sealed and the wood around the holes should be sanded smooth.
